How long have they stayed since Migrants Moved to Debre Zeit- residence duration of migrants in Debre Zeit:

In enumeration area a person is considered as a migrant, if he/she was born in another town or any part of the country. However, a person is non-migrant, if he/she was born in the area of enumeration or in the given town and has been continuously residing there up to enumeration period. The answer categories were (1) below one year (2) one year (3) two years (4) three years (5) four years (6) five to six years (7) seven to nine years (8) ten years and above (9) since birth.

The summery table below provides information about what proportion of the population in Debre Zeit, East Shewa Zone, and Oromia Region are migrants and what proportion of the migrants are new comers that is under one year and what proportion are long timers who stayed over 10 years.

Accordingly, based on the 2007 censes, about a fifth (22.3%) of Debre Zeit’s population is made of migrants. When we look at the duration of their residence, relatively a small proportion were new comers accounting for 2.7% of the migrants while the long term migrants accounted for 10.2% of the migrants. 

Among the migrants who reside in Debre Zeit, Female’s account for a slightly more proportion, with 23.7% female migrants compared with  21 % male.

What is interesting is the significant difference between urban rural migration as well as the urban migration between Debre Zeit, East Shewa and Oromia Region. For example when we compare Debre Zeit,  East Shewa zone and Oromia Region urban areas, Debre Zeit’s migrant share of the population  is half (22.3%) compared with  East Shewa Zone (50.4%) and Oromia Region (50.7%).
