Welcome to Debre Zeit / Bishoftu Magic
A place where childhood friends reconnect, memories come alive, and a remarkable life is celebrated.
If you grew up in Debre Zeit in the 1950s and 60s—or if you’re part of the generation that heard the stories—this website is for you.
We built this space for one reason: to celebrate the magic that shaped us.
What was the magic?
It wasn’t one thing. It was everything.
- The warm breeze off Lake Hora
- The salty water we swam in
- The crater lakes we explored
- The streets where we played football with rag balls
- The teachers who believed in us
- The friends who became family
It was a place where ordinary children achieved extraordinary things—not because we had much, but because we had each other.
Why this website exists
This site started as a simple question from the next generation: “How did you all become so successful with so little?”
We began collecting answers. We documented the stories. We traced the ingredients of the “Debre Zeit magic.”
Then, in the middle of this work, we lost someone irreplaceable.
Dr. Tebabu Tessema Wubetu—classmate, friend, leader, and the very embodiment of that magic—passed away before we could finish.
So now, this website has two intertwined purposes:
- To preserve the memory and life story of Dr. Tebabu Tessema Wubetu
- To document and celebrate the 1970 cohort of Debre Zeit high achievers
His story is our story. And our story is incomplete without him.
Who was Dr. Tebabu Tessema Wubetu?
He was the top of his class in 1970. He rose from modest means to become a respected professional. He was a friend, a mentor, and a bridge between generations.
His journey took him from Debre Zeit to university, through political struggle, and across the world. But he never forgot where he came from—and he never stopped believing in the power of community.
